William Saliba has surely given Mikel Arteta food for thought ahead of next season.

The Arsenal defender is currently out on loan with Marseille where he has been attracting plaudits aplenty for his stunning performances for the French club.

The 21-year-old has even been voted as Ligue 1’s Young Player Of The Year, beating Khephren Thuram, Arnaud, Kalimuendo, Nuno Mendes and Castello Lukeba to the award.

Saliba’s form during his time with Marseille has already established him as a senior international for the France national team, but many will be expecting him to be firmly on Arteta’s radar as well.

Arsenal are firmly in the battle to secure a fourth place finish in the Premier League, but their cause hasn’t been helped by a defensive injury crisis.

Kieran Tierney is a long-term absentee with a knee injury, while Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes are both doubts to face Newcastle.

White has been missing for a couple of games, but made the bench against Tottenham, while Gabriel suffered an injury in the closing stages of that match.

Add into that the suspension being served by Rob Holding for his sending off against Spurs and you can see that Arteta has a problem in his back line.

Whether Saliba will be involved at the Emirates Stadium next term dis not guaranteed, however, with Marseille boss Jorge Sampaoli expressing his desire to keep the defender at the club.

Sampaoli said: “William’s progress is linked to his development this season and the maturity he now has and his playing time.

“He is now consistent, he’s grown up as a player.

“In relation to his situation at the club, I hope that there is a possibility for us to retain a player like him, who knows the team.

“But I don’t know if it depends on OM, William or Arsenal, I don’t know the possibilities in this case.”
